First-year A Level Politics students at The Sixth Form Bolton had the fantastic opportunity to have a discussion with Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolton South and Walkden, Yasmin Qureshi, earlier this week.
Ms Qureshi was invited in by The Sixth Form to talk about her career as an MP and to take questions from the students. She began the session with an introduction to her career journey and gave advice for those wishing to pursue legal careers. She also spoke about what a ‘typical’ working week and day looks like for her.
The students then asked some probing questions ranging from the withdrawal of the winter fuel payments to the problems of crime in Bolton. Asked about the issues of youth crime in Bolton and nationally, Ms Qureshi said that she believes it’s important to look at the issues behind the crime and the increase youth provision rather than just handing out tougher sentences.
When asked about the biggest challenge of her career, Ms Quershi spoke about her work campaigning on Primodos, a drug that caused babies to be born with deformities and malformations.
Ms Qureshi was also asked about the defunding of the BTECS. (The former Conservative government had planned to defund a number of level 3 qualifications, including BTECs, in August in favour of T Levels. This is now under a "focussed review" by the Labour Party). She said that she would be exploring this further and planned to discuss the issue with the other Bolton MPs and The Sixth Form’s Principal, Stuart Merrills.
The students were extremely grateful to Ms Qureshi for coming in. First-year A Level Geography, Law and Politics student, Ruby Royce said:
“It was lovely to get to understand her daily life and ask questions about the government’s future plans”
First-year A Level History, Law and Politics student, Esha Akhtar said:
“I really enjoyed meeting Yasmin. She encouraged me to become a barrister as she was really informative”
First-year A Level Law and Politics and Vocational Level 3 Criminology student, Ahmad Nadeem said:
“It was great to meet her and hear about her fascinating career”
We would like to extend our thanks to Yasmin for giving up her time to come in and speak to the students about such important topics and share her valuable experience.
