Three B6 students were delighted to share with us that they are running as candidates to become a Youth Member of Parliament (MP).

As well as representing the children and young people of Bolton, nationally and regionally, Youth MPs sit on council meetings, Local Strategic Partnership meetings and Youth Action boards. They also meet with senior representatives from the Local Authority and partners to champion young people’s views. The current Youth MPs recently had the chance to represent the town at the House of Commons.

Cyrus Hopkinson, a former Bury Church of England High School student who now studies A Level Politics; Applied Law and Level 3 Public Services at The Sixth Form said he’s chosen to run as a Youth MP because:

" I have seen, for years in every youth constituency, that our Youth MPs have had little to no impact on the world around us, none that is visible or known to the young people in Bolton. I seek to change this with improvements in our Bee Network, currently unreliable, unclean and unsafe, a system which is used by hundreds of young people in Greater Manchester every day, as well as advocating for trans rights across the country."

Iman Zahra Hussain Batool, a former Thornleigh Salesian College student who now studies A Level English Language & Literature; Psychology and Spanish at The Sixth Form said:

“I’ve always been involved in youth voice and been passionate about making sure that young people’s voices are valued when decision making, which would directly impact our lives. I have decided to target two key areas in my manifesto. My first is Improving mental health support and awareness across Bolton. Everyone should be able to be comfortable and have someone they can be open to about their mental health. Everyone has mental health. My second is helping to create more opportunities for young people- focusing on life skills, careers and creativity.”

Fatima-Tuz-Zahra Ahmed, a former Smithills School student who now studies A Level Law, Politics and Psychology with Honours Programme at The Sixth Form said:

“I want to ensure that your people’s voices are represented, their wellbeing prioritised and their futures taken seriously. My manifesto points are: firstly, easy access to mental health support and reducing the stigma for young people and secondly: representing young people’s voices, shaping decisions that affect our lives.

Voting will be open for young people in Bolton between Tuesday 10 February and Thursday 12 March. We wish all of the candidates the best of luck in the elections.
