Bolton Hospital Volunteers from The Sixth Form
Students at The Sixth Form Bolton have been recognised for their hard work volunteering in organisations across the borough at a celebration ceremony.
Twelve first-year students have given their time to help out in The Valley Primary School in Astley Bridge as part of the Time to Read Scheme. The students spent six months reading with boys in year 6 attending every week for at least an hour. The school was delighted with the students’ commitment and gave them certificates, glowing references and Waterstones vouchers.
Time to Read Volunteers
There were over twenty students taking part in The Sixth Form’s Futures Academy following a rigorous selection process at the start of the year which was based on performance, class participation and a final interview. Those selected were provided with an opportunity to gain outstanding work experience that will bolster their UCAS personal statement and provide a greater insight into careers within the NHS.
The Futures Academy students completed a week's placement at the private Beaumont Hospital in a range of disciplines such as Pharmacy, MRI, Physiotherapy, Nursing and so on. They received fantastic feedback for their professionalism, friendliness and strong work ethic. The Sixth Form and Health & Social Care department are extremely proud of their achievements.
Noora Shammari from the Futures Academy
Over 30 students from The Sixth Form volunteered in Bolton Hospital. They committed to a minimum of 4 hours a week for 6 months to secure a voluntary role. The students were placed on various wards at the hospital, and helped out with visitors, meal times, drinks, and being runners between wards. Whilst NHS staff were busy undertaking their duties, our student volunteers spent quality time with vulnerable patients, having the time to sit with them for a chat or to hold their hand and reassure and comfort them.
Many students have given up their time to help support events within The Sixth Form. They’ve helped the Marketing team in front-of-house roles; delivered talks to parents and been fantastic ambassadors at numerous events.

The students have also contributed to the community in a number of other ways. Amy Chapman had a two-hour commute to volunteer at Green Fold Special School working with medically complex children. She did this for a total of 140 hours. Humaira Patel and Muhammad Ali Rehman both taught at their mosques accruing 100 hours each. Zahra Patel volunteered at the Bolton Hospice Charity shop and Kulsum Sufi volunteered at Bolton Hospice itself. Hannah Holden volunteered with the Girl Guides helping out with her local Brownies group.
Everyone at The Sixth Form is extremely proud of the students with Emily Dover, Enrichment Co-ordinator, saying:
"As part of National Volunteers Week 2024, I wanted to celebrate some of our amazing students who choose to volunteer in their spare time. We are aware of around 70 students who regularly volunteer, and invited them to take part in a celebration ceremony in front of all staff. Students were given their Volunteer Service Award Certificates and celebrated for their incredible dedication and selflessness. These students have a busy timetable at B6, many also manage part time jobs or extracurricular activities, yet on top of this they chose to volunteer in their local community. Staff were inspired by the details of the volunteering these students have been undertaking, and many staff said they were moved by hearing some of the powerful examples of the difference our students can make when volunteering at the hospital. Not only do these students give something back to the local community, but volunteering enables them to develop many new skills such as empathy and communication, and learn the art of using their initiative in the workplace. I am very proud of these students, and look forward to celebrating more students in the future, as we are seeing a growing number of students who wish to undertake the Volunteer Service Award which forms part of our Enrichment Programme"
