A Level Humanities and Social Science students recently gained valuable insight into the wide range of careers available within the Civil Service during an engaging talk delivered by Civil Servants from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
The session explored how subjects including History, Politics, Sociology and Religious Studies equip students with a broad range of transferable skills that are highly valued in the workplace. Students learned how critical thinking, research, analysis, communication and problem-solving skills developed through their studies can be applied to careers across the Civil Service.
Speakers explained how these skills are used in roles involving policy development, interpreting evidence, responding to complex issues and supporting diverse communities. The talk encouraged students to recognise the value of their A Level subjects beyond the classroom and consider the many opportunities available within the public sector.
Students were also introduced to the different pathways into the Civil Service, including graduate schemes and apprenticeship programmes, highlighting that there are multiple routes into a career in public service.
As well as focusing on academic achievement, the speakers encouraged students to take a proactive approach to their future careers by getting involved in extracurricular activities, volunteering and work experience. These experiences can help develop additional workplace skills, provide valuable industry insight and strengthen future applications.
The session offered students a greater understanding of the opportunities available within the Civil Service and wider public sector, while encouraging them to start thinking about the practical steps they can take now to prepare for their future careers.
