High level computing and IT skills are essential in the digital world we inhabit. In science, engineering, social and economic aspects of society, technology is the underpinning theme that helps progress. Studying this course, you will develop expertise and become a proficient critical thinker with the ability to solve problems and work effectively with others with emerging technologies.

Students will be expected to have five GCSEs at grade 9-4, or a Merit in a relevant vocational Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent). In addition, students will be expected to have GCSE grade 4 in English Language and a minimum of grade 3 in Mathematics.

You will study the role of computer systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations. Building on this knowledge, you will design, create, test and evaluate various systems in order to analyse information to identify trends and guide your planning effectively. Social media and web development will feature in your studies and your ability to use a range of software applications will develop to a professional level.

There are 13 units of study, of which seven are mandatory and six optional. Four of the mandatory units are assessed through three external written examinations and one practical examination – these four units are split between first and second year. The remaining units are internally assessed through assignments. Grades are classed as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

You will have the opportunity to join the Cisco Network Academy where you can gain industry recognised skills in areas such as Networking and Cyber Security. IT students also have the opportunity to gain Microsoft qualifications in MS Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word. These practical skills are highly sought after and valued by employers.

The course gives an insight into a variety of careers by engaging with a range of local businesses and guest speakers. There is an opportunity to undertake work experience in the second-year of the course. Our most capable students will complete an extensive placement of 350 hours or 50 days of work experience. All other students will undertake a minimum of a one-week work placement as part of the course. Building on our links with industry, you will go on trips to well-known technology organisations and have access to a range of industry experts through our external speaker programme.

You will be taught by experienced teachers who have worked professionally in the IT and computing industry. You will use industry standard software and be given time and individual support to develop your skills and expertise. You will work on assignments and tasks individually and you will also be encouraged to develop themes with like-minded individuals on group projects. The majority of students from this course progress to undergraduate studies in a wide range of IT related careers.

Students progress to degree apprenticeships and university courses in many different fields including: information technology, media communications, business management and communication systems. Career opportunities include website design, computer graphics, training and technical support, computer gaming, marketing and digital media.

Students will be required to undertake additional reading to develop an awareness of businesses in the real world. This can be achieved through following business news such as the BBC’s Business Twitter page or business influencers on social media. This course is highly regarded by universities and provides the necessary entry requirements for a wide range of higher education courses.
