Course overview

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages from Central and South America, Spain, United States and even the Philippines.

This course offers an exciting opportunity if you have been successful in your study of GCSE Spanish or if Spanish is your first language. You will develop your ability to communicate in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages.

Entry requirements

Students studying three A Levels will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 6 and three GCSEs at grade 5/4, including English Language and Mathematics at grade 5/4 or above. Or eight GCSEs at a minimum of grade 5. You must have studied GCSE Spanish or be a native Spanish speaker in order to study this course.

Political and artistic culture in Spanish speaking countries

Immigration and multiculturalism in Spain

Franco's dictatorship and the transition to democracy

Key features

This motivating course will enable you to develop an advanced level knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language, the culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, as well as practical and valuable language and transferable study skills.

You will study four themes that address a range of social issues and trends, as well as aspects of the political and artistic culture of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, one literary text and one film. We will cover topics like changing family structures, the world of work, impact of tourism, music, media, festivals and traditions, immigration and the multicultural society, the Franco dictatorship and transition to democracy.

Assessment

The assessment takes the form of:

Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation (40%), 
Paper 2: Written Response to Works and Translation (30%) 
Paper 3: Speaking (30%), completing two tasks.  

Your progress will also be assessed internally on a regular basis through set pieces of homework, vocabulary, grammar tests and mock exams.

Enrichment and Work Experience

There are opportunities to go to Home in Manchester during the Spanish Film Festival and other dedicated language events at local universities.

Future career opportunities

Language qualifications are welcomed by employers and it is a great skill to have in the global work market. In addition, Spanish is one of the top five languages used in business, and employers value the transferable skills. A language qualification prepares you for careers with good communication skills including business, management, law, international marketing, teaching and journalism.

Additional information

In higher education, Spanish can be studied on its own, in combination with another language, or with subjects such as English Literature, English Language, Media Studies, and forms an important element of many European Studies courses. Spanish goes well with any subject at university. The choice is yours.
